The only matches that belong in this category are the Back-to-Back Undertaker/Shawn Micheals matches. Steamboat told an A&E doc that he and Savage wrote out more than 300 moves to execute prior to the match.

Steamboat doesnt get enough flowers as one of the best in ring workers ever. OG fans know how amazing he was. Savage could be argued as the original Mr. WrestleMania before HBK coined that moniker. This classic, running the gauntlet at WM IV, the iconic moment at WM VII while pulling out a great match from Ultimate Warrior, and another great match against Flair winning the title again at WM VIII.

The promo Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat did before his entrance with George "The Animal" Steele was epic without warning. I can only imagine back in the days the electricity in the air in any company felt so real to many people it drove them crazy to cheer or boo. God bless both Steamboat and the late, great "Macho Man" Randy Savage for making a great match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

And RIP Silverdome (1975-2017) in ‘87 it was the largest stadium in the US and had a unique fibre glass roof held up by air pressure. With over 85.000 wrestling fans in attendance, it was a sight to behold. I remember watching this match over and over again as a 12 year old in ‘87 … it still is one of my all time favourites.

I learned that Macho Man wrote and rehearsed every single detail on paper which was about many pages long. Ricky Steamboat was so overwhelmed rehearsing every step when going over this with Macho Man because he was so obsessed with being a perfectionist. Randy Savage's brother Lanny Poffo even said it was Macho Man's best match ever and was so upset that he never had a better match later on in his career. Being a perfectionist paid off because this match was excellent.

@@oldschoolgnrfan6035 You're right, Randy Savage wrote 167 steps when it was rehearsed with Ricky Steamboat. Vince McMahon thought he wasn't big like the other wrestlers, but Macho Man made up for it with his charisma, athleticism, and mic skills. Macho Man was one of the best if not the best.

People paid to see Hogan and Andre - the pops Andre and Hogan received from the beginning till the end supersede this match by 10 fold - 30 million tuned in to see Hogan and Andre on tv, you're delusional and a silly mark to state this match stole or was anything more than what it was. I started watching wrestling at 8 years old in 1983. I was born in Las Vegas where luckily there was an excellent cable system Prime Cable, which eventually becamed Cox. We had WWF All Star Wrestling on USA Network and the NWA shows on TBS and then several shows on UHF syndicated TV. When they announced WrestleMania 3 in early January 1987 with the then brand new Pay Per View option my Dad was so cool, he didn't hesitate to order it for us. I remember like it was yesterday, Savage /Steamboat was unreal. Still one of the greatest matches ever, if not THE greatest period ...

Lasts as long as a cuppa cawfee, and is as close to art as wrestling gets. From the arm drags to the leaps over the rope to to the killer thrill-a-second ending, this is a perfection. And the commentary is Monsoon/Ventura at a peak. A match ahead of its’ time.

I watched this live in 87, I was 9 years old. The match felt like an eternity. I remember the Macho Man smashing Steamboats throat and thinking he was never coming back. I remember the love triangle with George Steele. I marked so hard when Steamboat won LOL just to watch him lose the title to the Honkey Tonk Man on superstars of wrestling a few weeks later. This is in my opinion the greatest match I have ever watched.

It's amazing how a match from 1987 holds up so well in 2024 and there's one simple reason why.... Both guys are actively trying to win the match. They're not doing any crazy dives or head drop moves or furniture spots. They're simply trying to WIN THE MATCH!

EVERYthing was perfect! Not just the wrestling, but also the announcing (Gorilla & Jesse), the referee, the crowd, the managers (Animal & Liz), and the ending (title switch). EVERYthing was 5 star!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
